He is perpetually shrouded in darkness, and is inclined to make italicized speeches. Isabella Vernaducci (or is it Wannaduchy? Whataducky? Whatadouchebaggy?) braves death, storms, tempests, ugly surly butlers, and all to get an audience with the mysterious Don Nicolai DeMarco. Maybe there’s hope of a truly great book by Ms Feehan one day. In fact, after what seems like a huge output of a million books a year, Ms Feehan is slowly showing a common but stereotypical evolution as an author: she has left the “heroines in romance novels needn’t have any personality, only a tendency to be perpetually in trouble” stage to move on to the “heroines have to be perpetually in trouble, but now they have to be strong, only in this case I still confuse ‘strong’ with ‘mouthing off like a feisty but braindead wench who has still no common sense'” stage. Yeah, I kinda like this book, better than the Carpathian ones. Fans of those Carpathians’ mind-rape and utter subjugation of their weak-willed walking ovaries with breasts will also be disappointed – the “intensity” of the said Carpathian brutes’ bossing of their women is noticeably absent here. People, this is not part of the The Carpathian series.

In The Number Ones, Breihan writes about twenty pivotal #1s throughout chart history, revealing a remarkably fluid and connected story of music that is as entertaining as it is enlightening. But readers no longer have to wait for his brilliant synthesis of what the history of #1s has meant to music and our culture. The Billboard Hot 100 began in 1958, and after four years of posting the column, Breihan has written into the early aughts. The column, in which he has been writing about every #1 hit in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 in chronological order, has taken on a life of its own, sparking online debate and occasional death threats. Breihan launched his Sterogum column, “The Number Ones,” figuring he’d post capsule-size reviews for each song, but discovered was so much more to uncover. This revised and expanded edition extends that legacy, offering an accessible foundation for examining gender in the reader's life and in the broader culture while arguing for the dismantling of all forms of oppression. The original is a classic of modern transgender theory and literature and, alongside Bornstein's other work, has influenced an entire generation of trans writers and artists. "This updated edition of Bornstein's formative My Gender Workbook (1997) provides an invigorating introduction to contemporary theory around gender, sexuality, and power. Publisher : Routledge 2nd edition (). I like crisp prose, clean lines, smart phrasings. and as an opening sentence it just stuck in my craw and tainted the rest of the book. There is a way to be evocative and complicated and beautiful all at once, "the smile on your face was the deadest thing alive enough to have the strength to die," anyone? i can feel raymond carver hurling an empty bottle of booze at this sentence in disgust, and for once, i am with him. I am standing on a corner in Monterey, waiting for the bus to come in, and all the muscles of my will are holding my terror to face the moment I most desire. This book suffers from many of these sentences. and you know why?īecause i write huge purple monsters of sentences and only end up making myself small and shy when i come across them years later. and - well, let's save something for the biopic, shall we? and i would smoke a joint and lie on my tummy and record my huge earthshattering thoughts. and i would lie on my tummy and kick my feet in the air and record my tiny thoughts. Aliens Never Invented the Wheel: Many aquatic civilizations stagnate in industry due to the difficulty in creating fires underwater. There are even some that are made of sound, some have time but lack space. Alien Geometries: Not all of the Star Maker's creations are Euclidean. An Aesop: It is important to love your neighbor, and to balance action with contemplation. After examining several individual alien societies in some detail, the book's perspective gradually pulls back from a planetary to a galactic scale, then to a universal scale, and finally to a viewpoint that encompasses the Star Maker himself and all of his various created universes.Īlso like its predecessor, it's told through the framing device of a man (Stapledon himself, presumably) being given this "guided tour" of reality telepathically by advanced beings from the future. Like Last and First Men, the story's viewpoint grows broader and broader as it progresses, though this time it is a broadness not only of time but of space. When he decided that the former book - which chronicled the entire (future) history of humankind - had not been nearly ambitious enough, Stapledon followed it up with a history of the entire universe, culminating in a brief glimpse into the nature and history of God himself (the titular Star Maker). Star Maker is a 1937 Science Fiction novel by Olaf Stapledon, and a sequel of sorts to Last and First Men. Pucci wears a slim, black gown, in the style of a priest's vestment, closely resembling a cassock, or a soutane. These star irises appear again in the anime, however only for certain scenes, such as when he first meets Jolyne. In early depictions, his irises had a plus sign shaped star design which changed into a solid color incomplete disk, missing a circular section either on the left or the right side. He has thin sideburns, spreading at the edge of the middle of his jaw. Later depictions have the shaved lines of each hexagon joining and going to the base of his skull by forming a one-chevron line. In early depictions, the other side of these hexagons joined the rest of the hair with another zig-zagging strand of hair and shaved lines formed a triangle behind each ear in a way that the larger mass of hair formed a large plus sign on the back of his head. Pucci has very short white hair with shaved lines forming two elongated hexagons of hair between his scalp and his temples, each joining the corresponding eyebrow with a zig-zagging strand of hair. Pucci is a dark-skinned man of average to above-average height and slim to fit build. Parents and children alike will enjoy this touching portrayal of an eternal truth. Max Lucado's beautiful story reminds us that we are special to God just the way we are. Then one day he visits Eli the woodcarver, his creator, and he learns that his worth comes from a different source. Punchinello, covered in gray dots, begins to feel worthless. Each day the residents award stickers-gold stars for the talented, smart, and attractive Wemmicks, and gray dots for those who make mistakes or are just plain ordinary. In the town of Wemmickville there lives a Wemmick named Punchinello. In this delightful children's tale, children will love hearing how Eli the woodcarver helps Punchinello understand how special he is-marks and all. I mean, sharing my love for these fantastic free reads with you guys. Hi! Completely clueless ice hockey virgin here!Įver since I fell down that fanfiction rabbit hole, I enjoy preach. This may have been fan-fic/slash, but it is on my list of best books I have read this year. Wanted to see the fallout from the next day after the end of the book, wanted to see the guys together moving forward, but that's because I'm greedy. The plot-mover of this book is a misunderstanding, but in this context it is wholly believable and you'll only want to kick both guys a little bit. Sid in his tentative awakening and uncertainty is wonderful, but it is Alex, with his humor and silliness and great heart who will make you fall in love. The relationships of the guys with each other, their teammates and family and the wider world, are the centerpieces of this story. The hockey background is very well done - enough emphasis to be central to the story of two professional players but not too much. The characters are perfect, the plot is clean (although the initiating episode gave me a little pause.) The story becomes wonderfully angsty, believable and painful enough to put an ache in your chest. This story just displaced Tigers and Devils as my favorite sport-centered M/M book.
